WILDERNESS RUN VINEYARDS AND 1781 BREWERY

In many parts of Virginia, you can't toss a stick without hitting a historical marker recalling the bloody battles of the Civil War. Wilderness Run Vineyards lays claim to one of the most interesting stories: it was on this farm that General Stonewall Jackson's arm was amputated after being shot by his own troops (mistakenly, one presumes). Jackson died of pneumonia a week later and was laid to rest in Lexington, while the limb itself was given a proper burial at Ellwood plantation on Wilderness Run Battlefield, about five miles from where the winery stands now.

These days at the farm, things are a lot more peaceful. Visitors are welcome to ramble and check out the turkeys, guineas, ducks, horses, donkeys and llamas, or bring a fishing rod for come catch-and-release with a glass of wine by the pond.

Most weekends, there's a music event to enjoy. Bring your own chair or set up at one of the picnic tables on the sprawling grounds.

At this writing, Wilderness Run had only one estate wine on offer, while their vines continue to mature. Tastings are supplemented with wines from around the state. Wilderness Run vineyards are growing Malbec, Petit Verdot, Viognier, Nebbiolo, Barbera, Sangiovese and Chambourcin. Future plans call for Chardonnay, Albarino, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tannat, Vidal and Seyval. A variety of cigars are offered for sale.
