CROSSKEYS VINEYARDS

Yummm, port. Cross Keys makes theirs from 100% Touriga Nacional (considered by many to be Portugal's best wine grape), and ages it for two years in French and American oak barrels. The winemakers say it has distinctive aromas of dark cherries and prune with a hint of sweet kumquat or orange peel on top.

CrossKeys' wines have moved into the award-winning realm, particularly the Ali d'Oro, a luscious desert wine make from Vidal blanc and Traminette.

Also interesting here is the international staff, with owners coming from Iran and staff coming from all over. And the rather grand size of this facility, with its arched doorways surrounding an open-air piazza. This is a big-operation, big-event kind of place, with equally grand views over rolling vineyards and humpbacked mountains.

CrossKeys' Bistro is open daily, putting out very professional plates with produce from the winery's garden, or grown nearby. Soups, sandwiches, pizza and pasta are available for lunch. If the ravioli dressed with corn, queso blanco and remoulade is available, don't miss it.

Weddings and other private events welcome; covered outdoor dining areas; plenty of parking for buses and RVs.

CrossKeys grows 10 varietals on nearly 30 acres of vineyard, including Vidal Blanc, Chardonnay, Traminette, Viognier, Chambourcin, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Touriga Nacional.
